Blueleaf Energy and Universal Peak secure financing for Malaysian BESS project

Blueleaf Energy and Universal Peak Sdn Bhd have achieved financial close with United Overseas Bank for a utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) project in northern Malaysia. The project, located at Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah, will have an installed capacity of 100 MW/400 MWh.

Developed by BKHM BESS—a joint venture between the Singapore-based Blueleaf and Malaysian infrastructure company Universal Peak—the facility will utilize lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology. The site is expected to house 88 liquid-cooled, 20-foot battery containers and 14 power conversion system and medium-voltage skid units. The project will operate under a build, own, and operate model with a 15-year operating term, aiming for commercial operation by April 30, 2027.

The project was one of four selected under the Energy Commission of Malaysia’s inaugural Malaysia Battery Energy Storage System (MyBeST) programme. Power from the facility will be exported at 33kV via an underground cable to Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s Bukit Kayu Hitam substation.
