BlueScope Steel reports 857% surge in annual net profit
BlueScope Steel reported a significant increase in annual profit, with net profit after tax reaching $802 million for the year ended June 30. This represents an 857 per cent increase compared to the 2025 financial year, a surge attributed to the company exiting a heavy investment phase and seeing strong performance in premium and pre-painted steel products.
Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rose to $1.27 billion. Much of this growth was driven by North American operations, which saw underlying earnings double to $1 billion. The company's North Star steelmaking mill in Ohio remains a key asset in this region.
The financial results follow BlueScope's earlier decision to reject a $15 billion takeover bid from SGH and its US partner, Steel Dynamics. Managing Director Tania Archibald stated that the previous offers did not reflect the fair value of the company's assets and potential, a view she suggests is being validated by the current results.
