Bluetongue disease outbreak confirmed in Chantada, Galicia

Authorities in Galicia have confirmed a fourth outbreak of Bluetongue disease in 2026. The latest case was detected in a cattle farm located in Chantada, in the province of Lugo.

Laboratory analysis conducted by the Algete Central Veterinary Laboratory in Madrid confirmed the presence of serotype 3. This marks the first time serotype 3 has been detected in the province of Lugo this year. The infection was identified through passive surveillance after the farm owner reported suspicions to the Consellería do Medio Rural.

The Xunta de Galicia has notified the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food via the Veterinary Sanitary Alert Network. This new outbreak follows three previous cases detected in July across the provinces of Lugo and A Coruña. While serotypes 3 and 8 have been identified in the region this year, serotype 4 has not been detected in 2026.
