Bluetongue virus spreads across UK livestock

The bluetongue virus (BTV-3) is spreading across the United Kingdom, with hundreds of cases confirmed in livestock. As of the current season, there have been 395 reported cases, including 382 in England, 10 in Wales, and 3 in Scotland. Recent infections have been identified in sheep and cattle in areas such as Powys, Mid Wales, and Dumfries and Galloway.

Veterinary experts and industry bodies, including the National Sheep Association and the Sheep Veterinary Society, are urging farmers to prioritize vaccination and strict quarantine measures. The spread is being facilitated by biting midges, which have thrived in recent hot and humid weather.

Farmers in regions like Cornwall have reported significant financial strain due to the loss of breeding stock and the high costs of vaccines and supportive treatments. The UK's Chief Veterinary Officer has advised livestock keepers to remain on high alert and report any suspected cases to the Animal and Plant Health Agency immediately.
