Bluetongue virus confirmed on over 500 farms in Wales
The Bluetongue virus (BTV-3) has been confirmed on more than 500 farms across Wales this season. The disease, which is transmitted primarily by infected midges, affects livestock such as sheep and cattle, causing symptoms including fever, swelling, lameness, and breathing difficulties.
Dr. Richard Irvine, the Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales, has urged livestock keepers to prioritize vaccination to protect herds and flocks. He warned that the virus will persist over the winter and emphasized the need for early planning to avoid supply shortages, noting that demand can quickly outstrip available vaccines once disease pressure increases.
Livestock keepers are also advised to exercise caution when sourcing replacement animals by verifying their vaccination status. While the disease poses a significant threat to the agricultural economy in rural Wales, officials noted that it does not infect humans and presents no risk to public health or food safety.
