Blumenau hospital ordered to pay R$ 300,000 for obstetric violence

A hospital in Blumenau, Santa Catarina, has been ordered to pay R$ 300,000 in compensation to a mother and father after a baby died due to obstetric violence. The Court of Justice of Santa Catarina (TJSC) upheld the decision, which allocates R$ 200,000 to the mother and R$ 100,000 to the father.

Investigations revealed that the medical team attempted to induce labor using oxytocin without the patient's consent, despite a previous cesarean section and medical contraindications for a vaginal birth. The court ruled that the medical conduct led to a uterine rupture and failed to manage known risk factors. The ruling emphasized that obstetric violence includes medical interventions performed without adequate information or patient consent.
