BMC announces immersion rules and logistics for Ganesh festival
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced several logistical and regulatory measures for the upcoming 10-day Ganesh festival, which begins on September 14, 2026. Following High Court orders, the BMC will mandate that all Ganesh idols under six feet in height be immersed in artificial ponds rather than natural water bodies.
To facilitate the festival, the civic body has prepared 348 immersion sites, including 281 artificial ponds, 44 beaches and jetties, and 23 natural lakes. Locations for artificial ponds will be accessible via QR codes and Google Maps. Safety and logistical preparations include the deployment of 1,132 lifeguards, 85 ambulances, 34 cranes, and 10 motor boats.
Additionally, the BMC is hiring a professional event planner to manage logistics at Girgaon Chowpatty, specifically for the tenth-day immersions. This agency will oversee VIP arrangements, idol line-ups, public announcements, and visitor facilities. The decision to outsource follows safety concerns after a recent incident involving the collapse of the Bhuleshwarcha Raja idol.
To support eco-friendly practices, the BMC has provided 858 tonnes of shadu clay and 25,400 litres of eco-friendly paint to idol makers at no cost. Infrastructure improvements have also been conducted, including the repair of over 4,000 potholes and the removal of obstructing cables along immersion routes.
