BMC introduces debris tracking and idol safety rules in Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has introduced several new regulations in Mumbai to improve urban management and public safety.

To combat illegal dumping, the BMC launched the ‘Mumbai Debris Control and Tracking System’ (MDCTS). This digital portal requires builders, developers, and contractors to register and track the collection, transport, and disposal of construction and demolition waste. All transport vehicles must use a Vehicle Tracking and Monitoring System (VTMS) via GPS. Violators face fines of up to 25,000 rupees per instance.

Additionally, following a fatal accident during a procession in Bhuleshwar, the BMC now mandates fitness certificates for Ganesh idols weighing more than one ton. The new safety protocol involves monitoring the entire process from the order stage to the idol's arrival at its destination. Ward-level teams will oversee compliance, and officials have been instructed to ensure all routes used for processions and immersion are free of potholes to prevent accidents.
