BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde opposes slum demolitions
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Ritu Tawde has opposed an administrative decision to demolish slums taller than 14 feet. Tawde stated that the administration should have consulted elected representatives before taking actions that threaten to destroy people's homes.
The Mayor emphasized that while the legality of the structures is a separate issue, the administration must coordinate with the elected house. She noted that since the 227 councillors have been elected, the administration must work in accordance with the decisions of the Corporation, which is the primary decision-making body.
This issue is expected to be raised in the BMC house for discussion. Group Leader and Mumbai BJP President Amit Satam has also expressed opposition, and a formal proposal will be brought to the house to allow all councillors to voice their opinions.
