BME researchers study power grid stability and outage prevention
A study published in Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering, co-authored by Bálint Hartmann of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), examines the prevention and restoration of power outages in modern electrical systems.
The research highlights that extreme weather-related disruptions have approximately doubled in frequency between the 2014–2023 period compared to 2000–2009. Additionally, the increasing complexity of power grids means that minor errors can trigger a domino effect, leading to large-scale system failures, as seen in a recent blackout on the Iberian Peninsula.
To mitigate these risks, the study predicts that future energy systems will rely heavily on advanced sensors, artificial intelligence, network automation, energy storage, and microgrids. In Hungary, grid stability is currently maintained through infrastructure, European connectivity, and the expertise of MAVIR.
