BMKG issues high wave warnings for Maluku and Lombok regions

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a wave warning for the Maluku archipelago from 14 to 17 July 2026 as Tropical Cyclone Haishen moved north of Papua. The agency forecast moderate waves of 1.25‑2.5 m across 21 sea areas, including the waters around Buru, Seram, Banda Neira, Kai, Aru, Tanimbar, Babar, Sermata‑Leti, Wetar, Banda Sea and Arafura Sea. Small fishing boats face risk when wind exceeds 15 knots and wave height reaches 1.25 m, while larger vessels such as tongkangs become vulnerable above 1.5 m.

Separately, BMKG warned of very high waves of four to six metres in the southern part of the Lombok Strait, West Nusa Tenggara. Surface winds were reported up to 37 km/h from east to south. The agency cautioned that fishing boats, tongkangs, ferries and larger ships could be endangered at wave heights of 1.25 m, 1.5 m, 2.5 m and 4 m respectively. Additional areas experiencing 2.5‑4 m waves include the northern and southern sections of the Alas Strait, southern Sumbawa waters and the southern Indian Ocean off NTB.
