BMO expands focus on Canada's defence sector
BMO Financial Group is increasing its investment in Canada's defence sector, responding to federal government commitments to raise military spending. The bank is part of a broader trend among major Canadian lenders, including CIBC and TD Bank, to support defence and critical infrastructure.
In September, BMO announced plans to mobilize up to $70 billion in new capital over the next decade for key economic sectors, including defence, energy, mining, and AI. The bank also co-hosted a defence finance forum in Toronto with the Institute of International Finance to discuss industry opportunities and challenges.
BMO economists forecast that Canada's commitment to spend 5% of its annual GDP on defence by 2035 could generate approximately $150 billion in annual economic impact. Additionally, BMO has joined the international Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB), a NATO-led initiative designed to reduce borrowing costs for military spending through pooled credit strength.
