BMW 3 Series to feature 25% secondary materials in 2027 model
BMW has announced that approximately 25 percent of the secondary materials used in the model year 2027 G50 3 Series combustion-engine sedan will consist of recycled or reused content. The vehicle's hood is expected to feature 70 percent recycled aluminum, a material also utilized in suspension components such as swivel bearings, wheel supports, and wheel rims.
The company's fully electric i3 variant utilizes a higher proportion of secondary materials, at approximately 31 percent. BMW reports that supply chain CO2e emissions for the combustion-engine 3 Series have been reduced by about 30 percent compared to the previous G20 generation.
Manufacturing processes are also being adjusted for sustainability. The Landshut plant produces crankcases and cylinder heads, while engines are sourced from Plant Steyr in Austria. To minimize transport emissions, casting, machining, and assembly are located in close proximity. Additionally, the Munich plant is slated to transition exclusively to electric vehicle production by 2027.
