Clemson University and BMW unveil energy-positive solar EV
Students at Clemson University, in collaboration with BMW, have unveiled the Deep Orange 17 (also known as Luminetta), an energy-positive electric vehicle prototype. The vehicle is designed to generate more solar energy during a typical day of urban commuting than it consumes.
The prototype features over 1,700 photovoltaic cells integrated directly into its exterior surfaces, developed alongside the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE. This solar skin allows the car to harvest energy while both driving and parked, even in partially shaded conditions. To maximize efficiency, the vehicle utilizes a lightweight multi-material chassis—combining steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, and 3D-printed metal—bringing its total weight to approximately 550 kg.
Simulations based on environmental data from Greenville, Frankfurt, Madrid, and Mumbai indicate that for a standard 20 km daily commute, the vehicle could produce enough surplus energy to provide an additional 50 km of driving range. The project demonstrates the potential for solar integration to increase vehicle energy independence and reduce reliance on traditional charging infrastructure.
