BMW and Volvo announce major job cuts amid industry pressures

BMW has announced plans to reduce its workforce by 8,000 positions by 2027 as part of a cost-cutting strategy to ensure profitability. The company’s voluntary redundancy program saw record-breaking demand, closing just 12 days after opening due to an overwhelming number of applications. While official figures were not confirmed, reports suggest some employees were offered severance packages exceeding 650,000 euros.

Similarly, Volvo Cars is restructuring to address financial difficulties, announcing the elimination of approximately 2,500 jobs, with 2,000 located in Sweden. The company reported an adjusted operating loss of 3.7 billion Swedish kronor in the third quarter, a significant shift from the 5.8 billion kronor profit recorded during the same period last year. Volvo, owned by the Geely group, is facing declining sales in China and margin pressures in the United States due to tariffs and reduced electric vehicle incentives. The restructuring aims to save 5 billion kronor by reducing administrative roles and consultancy contracts.
