BMW Announces Next‑Generation M3 Offered in Both Electric and Combustion Versions

BMW confirmed that the upcoming generation of the M3 sport sedan will be sold in two distinct versions: a fully electric model and a traditional gasoline‑powered model. The combustion variant will retain the updated S58 inline‑six engine equipped with M Ignite technology to meet Euro 7 emissions standards and will incorporate a 48‑volt mild‑hybrid system, but no plug‑in hybrid will be offered. BMW’s M boss Frank van Meel said the company is sticking to its “perfect combustion principle” and will not produce a hybrid between the two powertrains.

The electric M3 is slated to debut early next year and is expected to be faster than the gasoline version on both straight‑line acceleration and track performance. The gasoline version is expected to follow later, possibly around 2028, and a manual gearbox may still be offered. The dual‑approach strategy aims to satisfy enthusiasts who prefer traditional engines while also addressing the shift toward electrification.

BMW presented a prototype of the new M Neue Klasse at the 24‑hour Le Mans race, signalling the technical direction for the upcoming models.
