BMW begins mass production of electric i3 sedan in Munich
BMW has officially commenced mass production of the i3, a new electric sedan built on the company's Neue Klasse architecture. This marks a major milestone for the Munich manufacturing plant, which has undergone a four-year transformation to accommodate electric vehicle production. Following this rollout, the Munich facility is scheduled to transition to producing exclusively electric models by 2027, ending nearly a century of internal combustion engine manufacturing at that location.
The i3 is seeing intense customer interest, prompting a significant increase in production volumes. BMW officials noted that the transition to the Neue Klasse platform is expected to reduce manufacturing costs by approximately 10% through optimized processes and digitalization. While the company moves toward electrification, it continues to offer diesel options for large SUVs, such as the X5 and X7, to address long-distance driving needs where electric range and charging speeds are still evolving.
