BMW M3 electric to rival gasoline version in internal competition

BMW will launch an all‑electric M3 in 2027, equipped with four individual wheel‑mounted motors that can deliver up to 1,000 hp in a top‑trim version. The powertrain is managed by the central “Heart of Joy” controller, enabling precise torque vectoring, enhanced agility and stability, and simulated gear changes. BMW’s M‑division chief Frank van Meel describes the electric model as a “natural enemy” of the traditional six‑cylinder M3, saying the company is “fighting against ourselves” because the electric version attacks its best‑selling product. Both powertrains will retain the M3 name, with the gasoline generation slated for a 2028 release. Van Meel likens the four‑motor setup to a kickboxer, noting that “you never kick with both legs” – each wheel’s torque is applied independently for optimal cornering. BMW aims to offer customers a choice between the electric and gasoline variants while showcasing the dynamic advantages of electric drive.

The strategy underscores BMW’s intent to keep the M3’s heritage while pushing a new era of vehicle dynamics, positioning the electric M3 as a direct competitor to its internal combustion predecessor.
