BMW considers building automotive plant in Algeria
BMW is exploring the possibility of establishing a new automotive manufacturing plant in Algeria as part of its strategy to return to the country's market. While the resumption of commercial sales is expected to be imminent, the industrial project involving local production remains in the evaluation phase.
This potential move aligns with Algeria's updated industrial policy, which encourages local manufacturing over simple vehicle importation. Current regulations require passenger vehicle manufacturers to achieve specific local integration rates, starting at 10% by the second year and reaching 30% by the fifth year. The regulations also mandate the integration of processes such as stamping, welding, and painting through local operations or subcontracting.
No official decisions have been finalized regarding the investment amount, the specific location of the plant, production capacity, or the specific models to be assembled. No Algerian partners or implementation timelines have been disclosed at this stage.
