BMW Deploys Humanoid Robot ‘Aeon’ to Build Electric Vehicle Batteries in Leipzig
BMW has begun a pilot program in its Leipzig factory, introducing the humanoid robot Aeon to handle high‑precision tasks in the assembly of electric‑vehicle battery packs. The 1.65‑metre, 60‑kilogram robot mimics human size and movement, equipped with 21 sensors—including high‑definition cameras, radars and force sensors—to perform pick‑and‑place operations with continuous loads of up to 8 kg. It operates for about three hours before automatically swapping its own battery in roughly three minutes, minimizing line downtime. Aeon is trained through digital twins of the Leipzig plant using Nvidia‑based simulation and reinforcement‑learning techniques, allowing it to adapt to the demanding environment of high‑voltage battery manufacturing.
Automation is spreading across many sectors worldwide, from self‑checkout kiosks and AI‑driven chatbots to manufacturing robots and autonomous vehicles.
