BMW develops first fully electric M3 performance model
BMW is in the final stages of developing the first fully electric BMW M3, a significant milestone for the M division. Utilizing the Neue Klasse technology and the Gen6 architecture, the upcoming model is expected to feature four electric motors and a battery capacity exceeding 100 kWh.
The powertrain will consist of two units, one on each axle, with each unit containing two electric motors in a parallel arrangement. This setup allows for precise torque distribution to each wheel via the Dynamic Performance Control system, managed by the ‘Heart of Joy’ central control unit. The vehicle will also feature the ability to fully decouple the front axle for two-wheel-drive operation when all-wheel drive is not required.
The M3 has been a benchmark for the BMW M brand for 40 years, evolving from its 1985 debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show to various generations of coupe, sedan, and cabriolet models. This transition to an all-electric platform marks a major shift in the lineage of the high-performance sports family.
