BMW advances Neue Klasse EV lineup and hydrogen technology

BMW is advancing its Neue Klasse electric vehicle lineup with several key developments. The new iX3 SUV has seen significant success in Europe, surpassing 100,000 orders and prompting increased production at its Debrecen, Hungary plant. In the United States, BMW has moved up the reservation date for the new i3 electric sedan to September 29. The i3 50 xDrive is expected to feature a 108.7 kWh battery, an 800V platform capable of adding 250 miles of range in 10 minutes, and an EPA-estimated range of up to 440 miles.

Beyond battery electric vehicles, BMW is continuing its investment in hydrogen technology. The iX5 Hydrogen, featuring a third-generation fuel cell system developed in collaboration with Toyota, is slated for a 2028 release. This model aims for a 750 km WLTP range and a refueling time of under five minutes.

On the commercial front, BMW CEO Milan Nedeljković has expressed concerns regarding the pricing strategies of Chinese automakers in Europe, stating that certain prices 'make no commercial sense.' While criticizing these competitive levels, Nedeljković has voiced opposition to new tariffs, suggesting that voluntary agreements between the EU and China would be a more stable solution than trade escalations.
