BMW develops next-generation 3 Series with electric and hybrid options

BMW is entering the final development phase for its next-generation 3 Series, which will feature both fully electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) options. The electric i3, part of the Neue Klasse architecture, is debuting with a range of up to 892 kilometers (WLTP) and utilizes advanced computing systems for enhanced driving dynamics.

For combustion enthusiasts, the new 3 Series will offer four- and six-cylinder petrol engines equipped with 48V mild-hybrid technology. The flagship M350 xDrive will feature a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six engine producing 443 hp and 580 Nm of torque. This model is expected to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and includes features such as adaptive M suspension and a ‘Drift Moment’ function that allows for rear-wheel-drive operation during controlled oversteer.

Development and testing are currently underway at facilities in Miramas, France, following winter testing in Sweden. The new generation aims to bridge the gap between traditional driving pleasure and the brand’s electric future, with production for the ICE models expected to begin in the second half of 2026.
