BMW ends i3 production, previews new iX4 electric SUV

BMW announced that production of the i3 electric city car will cease in July, ending a nine‑year run that saw 250,000 vehicles built at the Leipzig plant in Germany. The i3 was the brand’s first mass‑market EV and has been phased out as the company shifts focus to newer models.

At the same time, BMW unveiled its upcoming 2027 iX4, a fully electric model that will replace the current X4. The iX4, spotted driving in Munich, adopts a fastback silhouette that resembles a grand tourer rather than a traditional SUV. It will be offered in two all‑wheel‑drive trims, feature a Gen6 eDrive system, a 108.7 kWh battery (112.2 kWh for the U.S. version) and is expected to deliver a range of over 400 miles on a single charge. The model is slated for launch in the United States later this year.
