BMW expands electric vehicle lineup with Malaysia‑assembled i5 launch and i3 Touring spy reveal

BMW introduced the i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro as its first fully electric model assembled in Malaysia. The sedan retains the 5 Series silhouette, is priced at RM368,800 (RM392,300 with a five‑year warranty package) and is powered by a rear‑mounted 250 kW motor delivering 0–100 km/h in 6.0 seconds. Weighing 2,120 kg, the i5 features a low‑mounted battery, adaptive suspension, rear‑wheel steering and a spacious 490‑litre boot, though rear‑seat headroom is limited.

Separately, spy photographs have revealed the upcoming BMW i3 Touring, an electric wagon based on the new Neue Klasse platform. The model is expected to share the i3’s dual‑motor layout, with the i3 50 xDrive delivering up to 345 kW, and a rear‑drive i3 40 variant at 235 kW. It will use sixth‑generation eDrive technology, an 800 V architecture and a 108.7 kWh battery, offering WLTP range slightly below the i3 sedan’s 900 km. BMW is also considering high‑performance M versions, potentially including a four‑motor electric M3 Touring.
