BMW gears up for ‘Neue Klasse’ EV launch, modernises Leipzig plant and ramps up Hungarian output

BMW introduced its next‑generation electric vehicle platform, dubbed the “Neue Klasse”, with the concept car Vision Neue Klasse X shown at IAA 2023. Serial production of the new models is scheduled to start in October 2025 at a plant in Hungary, where an annual volume of 150,000 vehicles is planned.

In Germany, the company will shut its Leipzig factory for about five and a half weeks this summer to carry out extensive modernisation work. The upgrade aims to equip the site, which employs roughly 11,600 people, to produce the upcoming electric models beyond the current iX3. Plant manager Petra Peterhänsel said, “A Neue Klasse érkezésére készülünk” (“We are preparing for the arrival of the Neue Klasse”). The Leipzig plant, previously known for the i3 and now for the Mini Countryman, will receive new production equipment, upgraded infrastructure and the technical capacity required for the next wave of BMW’s electric vehicles.
