BMW introduces Neue Klasse safety technology to prevent collisions

BMW is introducing new safety technologies through its Neue Klasse series, starting with the iX3 model in 2027. One key feature uses side radars to detect approaching vehicles or cyclists, providing an audible warning and temporarily blocking the electronic door locks to prevent collisions during exit.

While competitors like Lexus and Audi have implemented similar door-locking safety systems, BMW claims its Neue Klasse platform offers a unique emergency steering intervention system. This technology allows the vehicle to steer around obstacles, such as pedestrians or unlit cyclists, without leaving the lane.

Additional safety enhancements include emergency braking systems that can recognize animals and an ‘Attentiveness Assistant’ designed to take control if a driver becomes incapacitated. This system can stop the car, activate hazard lights, and contact emergency services. Furthermore, the vehicles will feature a safeguard against accidental acceleration at low speeds; if a driver hits the gas instead of the brake near an obstacle while moving under 2 km/h, the car will ignore the command and stop.
