BMW launches i3 50 xDrive First Edition and previews electric iM3 concept

BMW introduced the i3 50 xDrive First Edition, the second model of its upcoming "Neue Klasse" series, slated for release in the autumn of 2026. The electric sedan offers up to 906 km of range and can add 423 km after a ten‑minute DC fast‑charge. Powered by two electric motors delivering a combined 469 hp (645 Nm), it accelerates from 0‑100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. Standard equipment includes the new Panoramic iDrive system, a head‑up display, and the Soft Stop braking function. Optional M Sport and Iconic Glow packages add sport‑styled wheels, blue‑brake calipers, and exterior lighting effects.

Alongside the i3, BMW unveiled the M Concept Neue Klasse, a preview of the future electric M3—expected to be called the iM3. Built on the i3 platform, the concept features four independent electric motors, one per wheel, managed by the central Heart of Joy computer and Dynamic Performance Control. A 100 kWh battery can support a theoretical output of 1,341 hp, though the production version is likely to be limited to 650‑750 hp. Christian Karg, head of vehicle dynamics for the BMW Group and former M division chief, highlighted the emphasis on torque delivery and handling rather than outright power. Production of the i3 is set to begin within weeks at BMW’s Munich plant, marking the start of the "Neue Klasse" electric lineup.
