BMW introduces M2 with all‑wheel‑drive M xDrive system

BMW has unveiled a new variant of its compact M2 sports coupe equipped with the M xDrive all‑wheel‑drive system, marking the first time the model will offer four‑wheel traction. The car retains the 3.0‑liter twin‑turbo inline‑six engine delivering 473 hp (480 PS) and 600 Nm of torque, but the power is now split between the rear and front axles via an electronically controlled multi‑plate clutch that favors rear‑wheel bias.

Performance gains include a 0‑100 km/h (0‑62 mph) time of 3.7 seconds—about 0.3 seconds quicker than the rear‑wheel‑drive version—and a top speed limited to 250 km/h, extendable to 285 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package. The M xDrive works with an active M differential and offers a dedicated 2WD mode that disconnects the front axle for a pure rear‑wheel feel.

Production will begin in August 2026 at BMW’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico, with sales slated for late summer 2026/early 2027. Pricing starts around €90,800 (≈ $74,950 US) plus options, and the model adds the new Borusan Turkish Blue BMW Individual paint. The M xDrive version is about 55–60 kg heavier than its rear‑wheel counterpart, and it will be offered only with the eight‑speed automatic transmission.

The launch positions the M2 as a year‑round sports car for markets including the United States, Germany and China, while introducing the BMW M Ignite pre‑combustion technology aimed at meeting future Euro 7 emissions standards.
