BMW XM faces uncertain future amid declining global sales

The future of the BMW XM is uncertain due to significantly declining sales and low market demand. In 2025, the plug-in hybrid SUV was BMW’s slowest-selling model globally, with only 7,608 units sold. This downward trend continued into the first half of 2026, where sales dropped by 22.4% compared to the previous year.

Key markets have failed to meet expectations. In the United States, sales fell by 4.9% in 2025, and demand in China has also remained well below projections. Because the model is currently in a niche position and does not align with BMW’s strategic shift toward the ‘Neue Klasse’ architecture, there are no indications of a mid-cycle facelift or a second-generation successor.

Industry reports suggest the XM may reach a dead end by November 2028 without a direct replacement. While the vehicle remains a high-performance flagship with a 748 hp V8 option, its lack of volume makes it difficult for the manufacturer to justify the costs of a new generation.
