BMW M3 celebrates 40 years with upcoming electric model

The BMW M3 is marking its 40th anniversary since its 1985 debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Originally a 200-hp two-door coupe, the model has evolved through six generations, including various sedan and touring configurations, and has established a significant racing legacy in competitions such as DTM and the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.

Looking toward the future, BMW is preparing a major transformation with the introduction of an all-electric M3 prototype. Built on the sixth-generation Neue Klasse architecture, the electric model will feature the BMW M eDrive system with four individual electric motors—one for each wheel. This configuration is designed to provide precise control over torque distribution, enhancing traction, stability, and cornering accuracy.

While the electric prototype features a distinct high-pitched acoustic profile, BMW continues to develop a new generation of the M3 equipped with a traditional inline-six engine for internal combustion enthusiasts. Additionally, the broader 3 Series lineup is undergoing a reset with the 2027 models, which will integrate Neue Klasse technology and updated driver assistance systems.
