BMW prepares for end of internal combustion engines by 2030

BMW Group is preparing for a transition away from internal combustion engines (ICE) to meet potential government bans on fossil fuel vehicles. BMW CEO Oliver Zipse stated that the company will be ready to offer electric alternatives if regions, cities, or countries implement ICE bans.

Regulatory landscapes are shifting globally. The European Union has proposed a ban on fossil fuel vehicles by 2035, while Portugal has suggested a similar timeline for 2035. The United Kingdom has proposed stricter measures, aiming to ban petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and fossil fuel trucks by 2040. In the United States, President Joe Biden has set a goal for half of all vehicles to be electric by 2030.

As part of this strategic shift, BMW is reorganizing its lineup. This includes the phase-out of diesel engines in key models like the upcoming 3 Series, marking the end of a technology that has been central to the brand's European success since 1985.
