BMW R20 motorcycle nears production with new 2,000cc boxer engine
BMW is progressing toward the production of the R20, a new motorcycle featuring what is expected to be the largest boxer engine in the company's history. Originally unveiled as a concept at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May 2024, the model has transitioned from a design exercise into a near-production-ready machine.
The R20 utilizes a 2,000cc evolution of the Big Boxer engine found in the R18, which currently has an 1,802cc displacement. The design emphasizes the massive engine, with the cylinder heads protruding from the sides of the bike. Recent spy shots of testing models in Germany and southern France reveal a hybrid aesthetic that blends a retro roadster with a muscle cruiser.
Key design elements observed in recent testing include a single-seat configuration, rounded LED headlights, polished cylinder head covers, and a minimalist dashboard. While specific performance figures have not been released, the increased displacement suggests a significant power increase over the 91 horsepower produced by the R18. The R20 name may eventually represent a broader range of models within the BMW Motorrad lineup.
