BMW ramps up electric‑motor output at its Steyr plant in Austria

BMW has increased production of its sixth‑generation electric motors at the Steyr plant by shifting to a two‑shift work schedule. The change lifts weekly capacity to more than 4,000 units and is intended to raise annual output to well over 100,000 e‑motors this year.

The expansion supports the launch of the “Neue Klasse” electric models, starting with the iX3 SUV and followed by an electric 3‑series later in the year. Since the series‑start on 1 August 2025, Steyr has produced about 8,500 motors, and a second production line (Line 6) has been in serial operation since April. The plant supplies BMW factories outside China and handles core components such as rotors and stators on‑site, giving the automaker greater control over its electric‑drivetrain supply chain.
