BMW recalls 189,000 vehicles over potential fire risk

BMW is recalling 189,130 vehicles globally due to a defect in the starter motor relay that poses a potential fire risk. The issue affects 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series models manufactured between July 29, 2014, and November 12, 2020.

The defect stems from insufficient protection against water ingress in the starter relay. Moisture can enter the component, causing corrosion that may lead to an electrical short circuit. Such a short circuit near the starter motor can cause overheating and, in certain circumstances, ignite a fire.

To resolve the issue, authorized BMW service centers will replace the entire starter motor to prevent electrical failure. The repair is expected to be provided free of charge to affected owners. The recall is being monitored by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) under reference number 16791R.
