BMW recalls over 740,000 vehicles worldwide over fire risk

BMW AG has launched a global recall affecting 744,234 vehicles produced between July 2020 and February 2026, including Series 2‑7, X3‑X7, Z4 and the electric i3. The recall targets a defect in the starter‑motor relay that can overheat and cause a fire. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) assigned reference 16790R; about 42,300 of the affected cars are in Germany, with the remainder spread worldwide. BMW will replace the faulty relay free of charge and has not reported any injuries or material damage so far.

The recall underscores rising numbers of vehicle safety campaigns in Europe, with 2025 seeing a record 532 recalls in Germany alone. Owners will be notified directly by the manufacturer.
