BMW Regensburg plant celebrates 40 years of production
The BMW Group plant in Regensburg is marking 40 years of series production, having manufactured nine million vehicles since the first BMW 3 Series (E30) rolled off the line in October 1986. The facility has become the highest-volume automotive plant for the BMW Group in Europe, currently producing the X1 and X2 models.
In 2025, the plant reached a production record of 356,901 vehicles. The facility utilizes a flexible assembly line capable of producing internal combustion, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric models simultaneously. To modernize operations, BMW has invested over €6 billion in the location since its inception, supporting approximately 9,000 jobs across Regensburg and Wackersdorf.
Looking forward, BMW has invested roughly €400 million since 2023 into new structures and equipment to prepare for the ‘Neue Klasse’ production, which is expected to begin at the site in the second half of the decade. The plant is also integrating advanced digital solutions, including AI for automated surface finishing and quality checks, as well as autonomous vehicle movement within the loading areas.
