BMW sixth-generation battery tech wins innovation award in China
BMW’s sixth-generation battery technology, designed for its Neue Klasse electric vehicle lineup, has received the “Global New Energy Vehicle Innovative Technology” award at the 2026 World New Energy Vehicle Congress in China. BMW was the only automaker from outside China to receive this specific recognition.
The Gen6 technology utilizes cylindrical cells with a high-nickel cathode, offering a 20% increase in energy density compared to the prismatic cells used in previous generations. The system features an 800-volt architecture and a cell-to-pack construction that integrates cells directly into the battery to maximize space efficiency. This holistic system supports bidirectional charging, allowing vehicles to function as mobile power banks.
While most Neue Klasse models utilize nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry, the entry-level iX3 30 model produced specifically for the Chinese market utilizes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry.
