BMW starts Gen6 battery production in Irlbach-Straßkirchen

BMW Group has officially commenced series production of its new high-voltage battery assembly at the Irlbach-Straßkirchen plant in Lower Bavaria. The facility represents a roughly 1 billion euro investment aimed at supporting the company’s transition to electric mobility and its ‘Neue Klasse’ technology platform.

The plant utilizes a ‘Local for Local’ logistics strategy, producing Gen6 generation batteries—which feature a shift from prismatic to cylindrical cells—directly near vehicle assembly sites to reduce transport costs, secure supply chains, and lower the carbon footprint. This facility will serve as a central battery hub for the Bavarian production network, supplying the Munich plant and other locations.
