BMW targets 2027 launch of electric M3 to rival its gasoline model

BMW is developing an all‑electric version of its M3 performance sedan, slated for a 2027 launch as part of the new "Neue Klasse" platform. The company describes the electric M3 as the "natural enemy" of the internal‑combustion M3, keeping the same badge and silhouette while delivering zero‑emission performance. Chief of BMW M, Frank van Meel, says the car will retain a familiar driving feel with simulated gear ratios and a high‑voltage (800 V) architecture, a battery of more than 100 kWh integrated into the structure, four wheel‑mounted electric motors and a central controller dubbed “Heart of Joy.”

In parallel, BMW is testing a forthcoming M Performance 3‑Series model, dubbed the M350, in Nevada. The prototype, expected to reach market in early 2027, features a more powerful 417 hp engine, quad exhaust tips and an xDrive‑only drivetrain. The model reflects stricter Euro 7 emissions rules that may signal the end of large‑displacement gasoline engines in BMW’s lineup, with the M350 likely to be the last M‑Series sedan to use an inline‑six.
