BMW transitions to Neue Klasse with new iX3 electric SUV
BMW is undergoing a significant strategic shift centered on its next-generation 'Neue Klasse' electric vehicle platform, headlined by the new iX3. In China, the iX3 is being launched with a unified national pricing model to simplify the purchasing process and increase competitiveness against local manufacturers. The vehicle features an 800V high-voltage architecture, capable of adding 400 km of range in 10 minutes of charging.
This technological evolution is driving a radical redesign of vehicle interiors. BMW is moving away from traditional physical switchgear, including climate controls and the iDrive rotary dial, in favor of touchscreens, voice commands, and 'Panoramic Vision' head-up displays. BMW Australia CEO Vikram Pawah noted that this shift targets younger drivers who are accustomed to smartphone-style interfaces.
However, this rapid advancement has created challenges for existing models. The current flagship iX has seen significant depreciation in the US market, losing nearly 47.5% of its value within three years, as the superior specs and lower price points of the upcoming Neue Klasse models make older technology obsolete.
