BMW tests near-production electric M3 prototype
BMW is advancing development of the seventh-generation M3, which will include both electric and internal combustion engine options. A near-production electric prototype, designated ZA0, recently underwent final testing at the Miramas proving ground in France. The electric model is expected to feature four motors and a battery capacity exceeding 100 kWh, with performance estimates potentially reaching between 800 and 900 hp.
BMW plans to begin production of the electric M3 at its Munich plant in 2027. Following the electric launch, a gas-powered version featuring a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine is expected in 2028. The combustion model may incorporate a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to enhance the existing S58 engine.
The electric M3 has undergone extensive testing, including runs on Arctic frozen lakes and high-speed wind tunnel trials. BMW M leadership expressed satisfaction with the prototype's handling and cornering capabilities during recent evaluations.
