German luxury carmaker BMW AG announced a voluntary redundancy programme that will reduce its German workforce by about 8,000 jobs – roughly five percent of its global headcount – by the end of 2027. The cuts target administrative, research, development and planning staff; production workers are exempt. Around 40,000 employees in Germany will be offered the voluntary offer, with the programme slated to start in October 2026 and run until the end of 2027.

The restructuring follows a sharp decline in earnings. BMW’s second‑quarter pre‑tax profit fell more than a third to €1.7 billion, and the company cut its full‑year profit outlook after a weak performance in China and heightened cost pressures from the Middle‑East conflict, U.S. tariffs and the shift to electric vehicles. The automaker expects savings of about €1 billion a year from 2028. Shares have dropped roughly 36 % year‑to‑date.

BMW employs about 150,000 people worldwide, of whom roughly 84,000 work in Germany. CEO Milan Nedeljković said the measures are needed to make the group leaner and restore profitability.
