BMW to exclude diesel engines from eighth-generation 3 Series
BMW has confirmed that the eighth generation of its 3 Series, internally codenamed G50, will not include diesel powertrains. This marks only the second time in the model's history that diesel engines will be absent, following the first-generation E21.
The new lineup will focus on petrol-based engines, including 48V mild-hybrid technology and plug-in hybrid versions slated for 2027. Current available specifications include the 318 and 320 models with 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines, and the M350 xDrive featuring a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine. Additionally, the electric i3 will join the eighth-generation family.
This shift follows a significant decline in diesel market share for the brand. In Germany, BMW's diesel registrations fell to below 30% in 2025, with the 3 Series specifically seeing diesel share between 25% and 30%. The transition aligns with increasing market demand for electric and hybrid vehicles and tightening emissions regulations.
