BMW to launch first true electric M3 next year

BMW is developing its first true electric M car, the M3 ZA0, which is expected to launch next year. Unlike previous electric models with M badges, this vehicle will feature full M credentials, including four electric motors, simulated gear changes, and a dedicated rear-wheel-drive mode. The electric model will be built on the Neue Klasse platform.

BMW M head Frank van Meel stated that the decision to develop an electric M3 was driven by the belief that an electric drivetrain can produce a superior performance car, rather than being a response to emissions regulations.

The electric M3 is intended as an addition to the lineup rather than a total replacement for internal combustion engines. While the current G80 generation is expected to end production in 2027, a gas-powered successor, the G84 featuring an inline-six engine, is planned for 2028.
