BMW to offer both electric and combustion versions of the 3 Series
BMW is preparing for a significant shift in its lineup with the upcoming seventh generation of the 3 Series. The new G50 generation will feature both internal combustion engine (ICE) models and a new all-electric variant, the i3, which is built on the Neue Klasse architecture. While the ICE version will utilize an evolution of the CLAR platform, it will adopt design elements from the Neue Klasse family, including a redesigned double-kidney grille and updated lighting signatures.
Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M, noted that the company is effectively creating a “natural enemy” for itself by offering both a traditional six-cylinder M3 and a fully electric M3. The electric model will compete directly for the same customer base as the combustion engine version. BMW intends for both propulsion systems to coexist, allowing customers to choose between the performance and sound of a gasoline engine or the capabilities of an electric powertrain.
