BMW unveils eighth-generation 3 Series and all-electric i3

BMW has unveiled the eighth generation of its core 3 Series, marking a significant strategic shift by introducing both internal combustion and fully electric models under a unified design language. The new lineup will exclude diesel engines, focusing instead on gasoline, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants alongside the all-electric i3.

The electric i3 utilizes the new Neue Klasse architecture and features an 800V system, with the i3 50 xDrive offering a WLTP range of up to 912 km and 400 kW DC fast charging. In contrast, the gasoline-powered 3 Series (G50) will continue to use an evolved CLAR platform. The flagship M350 xDrive will feature a 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 443 hp, supported by a 48V mild-hybrid system, and includes a 'Drift Moment' mode for controlled oversteer.

Internally, both models will adopt advanced digital technologies, including the Panoramic iDrive system with a 17.9-inch central display and a new augmented reality head-up display. To support this transition, BMW has invested approximately two billion euros into upgrading production facilities in Munich and Dingolfing, as well as developing battery manufacturing capabilities.
