BMW unveils electric M3 with quad‑motor drivetrain targeting 800‑850 hp

BMW confirmed that its upcoming electric M3 will retain the M3 name and be built on a quad‑motor, all‑wheel‑drive platform. The powertrain can theoretically reach 1,341 hp, but the production model is expected to deliver around 800‑850 hp, well below the 1,000‑plus‑hp rumors. BMW’s vehicle‑dynamics chief Christian Karg stressed that “It’s not about the horsepower,” emphasizing precise handling over sheer output.

The electric M3 will feature simulated gear‑change ratios and a bespoke in‑cab sound system that can replicate classic inline‑six, V8 and V10 notes, which drivers can switch off. Prototypes have already been spotted worldwide, and the car is slated to debut next year with sales expected in 2027. BMW also announced a parallel gasoline‑powered M3 for 2028, likely a mild‑hybrid six‑cylinder model, to appease traditional enthusiasts.
