BMW cancels G74 rugged SUV project amid market slowdown

BMW has halted development of its G74 rugged off‑road SUV, a vehicle that was intended to rival the Mercedes‑G Class and Range Rover. Sources say the project never received final production approval and was shelved as the automaker reassesses its lineup.

The G74 was initially conceived as an electric model on the Neue Klasse platform before being shifted to the CLAR architecture, allowing multiple power‑train options. Market pressures, especially a weakening Chinese market, higher trade barriers and a deceleration in luxury‑SUV demand, prompted CEO Milan Nedeljković to review the company’s product strategy.

BMW also announced plans to cut 8,000 jobs as part of a broader restructuring. While the new X5 family will launch three variants in December 2025 at a starting price of $71,250, the G74 project will not proceed.
