BMW's Telelever Suspension System Explained

The Telelever is a front‑wheel steering and suspension arrangement developed by the German motorcycle maker BMW. Introduced in 1993 on the R 1100 RS, the system separates steering duties – performed by two fork tubes – from spring and damping functions, which are handled by a centrally mounted shock absorber. This design reduces front‑end dive during hard braking, keeping the boxer‑engine motorcycles more stable.

The concept traces back to the 1980s and was inspired by a front‑wheel guide devised by Norman Hossack. After the R 1100 RS, the Telelever appeared on the R 1100 GS, R 1100 RT, later K‑series models such as the K 1200 RS, and even BMW's C1 scooter.

Its distinctive layout, with a pivoting arm linked to the frame and a dedicated suspension unit, remains a hallmark of BMW's large‑capacity boxer motorcycles.
